introduction

surgical instructions

Before Anesthesia

You may not have anything to eat or drink (including water) for six (6) hours prior to the surgery appointment. No smoking at least 12 hours before surgery. Ideally, cut down or stop smoking as soon as possible prior to the day of surgery. A responsible adult must accompany the patient to the office, remain in the office during the procedure, and drive the patient home. >>Read more.

After an Extractions

After tooth extraction, it’s important for a blood clot to form to stop the bleeding and begin the healing process. That’s why we ask you to bite on a gauze pad for 30-60 minutes after the appointment. If the bleeding or oozing still persists, place another gauze pad and bite firmly for another 30 minutes. >>Read more.

After the Removal of Multiple Teeth in Preparation for Dentures

The removal of many teeth at one time is quite different than the extraction of one or two teeth. Because the bone must be shaped and smoothed prior to the insertion of a denture, the following conditions may occur, all of which are considered normal. >>Read more.

After Wisdom Tooth Removal

Sometimes the after-effects of oral surgery are quite minimal, so not all of these instructions may apply. Each person will respond differently from another in similar situations. The same procedure may also result in varying effects (swelling, bleeding, etc.) from the left side to the right side or from top to bottom. >>Read more.

After Dental Implant Surgery

Only liquids and soft foods are advised during the first six days in order to avoid food particles from lodging in the wound. Smoking should be avoided after having implant surgery to help insure the success of the implant. >>Read more.

After Biopsy

Biopsies are sent the University of Washington Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology Department, which is a division of the School of Dentistry. This is the only facility in the state that specializes in pathology of oral tissue; they provide the most accurate and complete information. >>Read more.

After Exposure of an Impacted Tooth

Do not disturb the wound. If surgical packing was placed leave it alone. The pack helps to keep the tooth exposed. If it gets dislodged or falls out do not get alarmed. >>Read more.

After Jaw Surgery

Following completion of the surgical procedure at the hospital, you will be transferred to a recovery room. There, progress will be monitored closely by nurses on duty. The breathing tube may remain in place for several hours after surgery to protect your airway. If you awaken during this period, you will not be able to speak. Although this may be uncomfortable, try to relax and the tube will likely be removed shortly. >>Read more.
